YOUR NURSING ROADMAP — SEP 6, 2026

Not every required course is a prerequisite

Some courses are co-requisites, and many programs don't require them finished before you apply.

Some of the courses on a program's required list can wait until after you apply.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Not Every Required Course Is a Prerequisite

When you look at an ADN program's required courses, don't assume every course has to be completed before you can apply.

Programs may separate their required courses into prerequisites and co-requisites, and understanding the difference can help you plan what you actually need to finish before the application deadline.

Prerequisites vs. Co-requisites

Prerequisites are courses that usually must be completed before you can apply to the nursing program. Some programs allow certain prerequisites to be in progress.

Co-requisites are courses that must be completed before graduation in order to graduate and meet RN licensure requirements, but many programs do not require them to be finished before you apply.

For example, if a program lists a course as a co-requisite, you may not need to delay your nursing application just because you haven't completed that course yet.

Should you complete co-requisites before starting nursing school?

If possible, consider completing your co-requisites before the nursing program begins.

Nursing school schedules can be heavy, and some programs encourage students to complete co-requisites beforehand so they have fewer non-nursing courses to manage alongside their nursing courses and clinicals.

When reviewing a program's requirements, make sure you know:

  • Which prerequisites must be completed before you apply
  • Which co-requisites must be completed before graduation

Not every required course is an application prerequisite. Know which courses you need before applying and which co-requisites you'll need to finish before graduation and RN licensure.
